I found an old beret at the flea market for 50 cents and I fell in love with it. After searching EVERYWHERE for the pattern with no success, I chose to recreate it. Whew!
This beret is quite challenging and I would put it in the experienced category. I can't remember what yarn I used, but I know it was some kind of baby pompadour yarn.
Cross Stitch Beret
Light Yarn (#3)
F/5 (3.75 mm) hook
Special stitches used:
FPDC: To make Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yo and insert hook from the front to the back around the post of the dc on the previous row. Complete as for regular dc.
BPDC: To make Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): Yo and insert hook from the back to the front around the post of the dc on the previous row. Complete as for regular dc.
1. Using magic ring: chain 3, 13 dc in ring, join with slst in top of ch 3 (counts as dc now and throughout) close ring (14dc)
2. ch 3, 1 dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each st around, join with slst in top of ch 3 (28dc)
3. *CROSS ROUND with ch 1 spaces*
ch 4, [working backwards] dc in last dc of previous round, [working forwards again] skip the first dc of the round then dc in the next stitch, then dc in the skipped dc, *skip next dc, then dc in the next stitch, chain 1, then dc in the skipped dc* rep from *to end, join with slst in top of ch 3 (28 dc)
4. Ch 1, sc in same st as joining and in each ch 1 space and st around, join (42 sc)
5. Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, dc in next 20 stitches, 2 dc in next st, dc in last 20 stitches, join with slst in top of ch 3 (44 dc)
6. Repeat round 3 (44 dc)
7. Repeat round 4 (66 sc)
8. Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, dc in next 32 stitches, 2 dc in next st, dc in last 32 stitches, join with slst in top of ch 3 (68 dc)
9. Repeat round 3 (68 dc)
10. Repeat round 4 (102 sc)
11. Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, dc in next 50 stitches, 2 dc in next st, dc in last 50 stitches, join with slst in top of ch 3 (104 dc)
12. Repeat round 3 (104 dc)
13. Repeat round 4 (156 sc)
14. Ch 3, dc in next stitch and each stitch around, join with slst in top of ch 3 (156 dc)
15. *CROSS ROUND no ch 1 spaces*
ch 3, [working backwards] dc in last dc of previous round, [working forwards again] skip the first dc of the round then dc in the next stitch, then dc in the skipped dc, *skip next dc, then dc in the next stitch, then dc in the skipped dc* rep from *to end, join with slst in top of ch 3 (156 dc)
